Avoiding the safe option
Yesterday I setup an account on Essay.app.
During onboarding, I'm asked what type of writing interests me. The options include everything from nature to business to religion.
Something inside me said I should select business, science, and technology. But an even bigger force pulled me to select literature, religion, and psychology.
I've spent many years ramming myself into the box I thought I should be in. But in all honesty I've very little interest in those things. Historically, I chose them purely because they seemed like the safe option.
On reflection, avoiding my natural interests probably affected my core values. Which is why I've often felt uncomfortable in my own skin. So, although I believed I was choosing the safe option, it really wasn't. Because 99% of people who also chose those options had a better chance of doing something meaningful.
The moral of the story?
Avoid the safe option.
